AIDS: Genetic Clues from HIV Elite Controllers Could Lead to Better Vaccines, Cancer Treatments (preview)

Feature Articles | Health Cover Image: July 2012 Scientific American MagazineSee Inside

A rare group of HIV-positive individuals need no medicine to keep the virus in check. Their good fortune could point the way to more powerful treatments--and perhaps a vaccine

UNIQUE STATUS: The genetic makeup of the individuals shown here has allowed them to fight the virus to a standstill without needing combination anti-HIV therapy. Scott Wafrock (top left) has lived with HIV for 26 years, Bob Massie (top right) for 34 years and Loreen Willenberg (bottom right) for 20 years. Doug Robinson (bottom left) learned he was HIV-positive in 2003.

Image: Richard Renaldi

In Brief

  • One out of 300 people infected with HIV are naturally able to control the virus without having to take antiviral medications.
  • Investigators believe the key to the good fortune of such elite controllers lies in the complex workings of their immune system.
  • Genetic studies reveal the precise reasons why the targeting and destruction of HIV-infected cells occur more quickly in the body of an elite controller.
  • Understanding this efficient, powerful immune response in greater detail might one day lead to better methods for preventing and treating AIDS.

One day in early 1995 a man named bob massie walked into my office at the outpatient clinic of Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. Massie told me he had been infected with HIV?the virus that causes AIDS?for 16 years and yet had never shown any symptoms. My physical examination confirmed he was healthy, in stark contrast to all other patients I saw that day. At that time, a new combination of drugs was being tested that would eventually slow the progressive decline in immune function that HIV caused. In 1995, however, most people who had been infected with HIV for a decade or more had already progressed to AIDS?the stage marked by the inability to fight off other pathogens. The young man standing before me had never taken anti-HIV medication and strongly believed that if I learned the secret to his good fortune, the information could help others to survive what was then generally thought to be a uniformly fatal disease.

Massie was born with hemophilia, a blood-clotting disorder. In those days, nearly all hemophiliacs were HIV-positive because they were infused repeatedly with blood products agglomerated from thousands of donors?none of whom were screened for HIV until the mid- to late 1980s. (Today hemophiliacs receive artificial clotting factors, which pose no risk of HIV contamination.) Some of Massie's blood samples that had been stored for a study revealed that he had contracted HIV in 1978. Yet every test I conducted on him or his stored samples showed that the amount of virus in his blood was vanishingly small and that his immune responses seemed as strong as ever.

The Household of Faith Church in Harstville to hold a presentation by Author Ginetta Hamilton

From The Household of Faith Church

HARSTVILLE, S.C. -?The Household of Faith Church #3, 720 Hudson Street, Hartsville, SC will culminate its Summer Enrichment program with a presentation by Ginetta Hamilton of Columbia.? The session is sponsored the Humanities Council of South Carolina and will be held on Thursday, June 21 at 10:00 A.M.

Hamilton is a native of Alvin, South Carolina and a graduate of the University of South Carolina. She taught for years at Joseph Keels Elementary School in Richland County and like many teachers throughout the state, retired during state budget cuts. Not only does Hamilton enjoy history, she says it is her calling.

Hamilton said she became frustrated after seeing so many students who were not interested in their own history.

?Everyone has a history, and everyone should know his or her history,? Hamilton said.

She said her frustration was what led her to write her first book.

?I said, ?If it?s going to happen, I have to get it done,?? Hamilton said. ?No one can make your dream come true but you.?

The title of Hamilton?s book clearly expresses the frustrations she experienced ? ?Black History: Someone Forgot To Teach The Children.?

Hamilton will discuss some of the many struggles faced by African-Americans throughout history in her book. She also includes a challenge for all, reflections, words of wisdom and even a story about President Obama in which Hamilton writes her theory about one of the reasons he decided to run for office.

The first chapter of the book is dedicated to the story of the African-American History Monument in Columbia.

Hamilton writes, ?Ironically, the State of South Carolina has the first and only monument that recognizes the contributions of African Americans on the grounds of a State Capital in the United States of America.?

The program is free and open to the public.? For more information, call Jannie Harriot at 843-917-3350.

Mayor Bloomberg Takes Serious Issue With Gov. Cuomo-Backed Teacher Evaluations Bill

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (file / credit: Edward Reed / Mayor's Office)

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg (file / credit: Edward Reed / Mayor?s Office)

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) ? The bitter battle over teacher evaluations took a turn Friday as Mayor Michael Bloomberg vowed to call more than 1 million parents to give them the 4-1-1 on their kids? teachers.

It?s Bloomberg?s counter attack to what he believes is an inadequate evaluation bill just passed by Albany, CBS 2?s Marcia Kramer reported.

?Let me tell you what we?re going to do, we?re going to have our schools call every single parent and we will tell you that you are entitled to this information, and if you want it just say yes or no. Ask us right now and then we will send it to you,? Bloomberg said.

The mayor announced the extraordinary move ? calling the parents of 1.1 million students from kindergarten through grade 12, after the Gov. Andrew Cuomo-backed bill stopped the public from getting access to teacher evaluations and required parents to request the evaluation.

The mayor said that?s not a formula that works here in the multicultural Big Apple.

?In New York City, most of our parents work. To go and to take time out to go to the principal?s office is just not possible for most. A lot of them, their command of the English language or their experience in dealing with bureaucracies is not good,? Bloomberg said.

The mayor said the Legislature caved to the teachers union, but United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew said he doesn?t see it that way. He said the mayor wants teacher evaluations made public to vilify teachers.

?I know that the teachers of New York City feel that they should be given more respect by this administration,? Mulgrew said.

Parents that spoke to CBS 2?s Kramer on Friday said they support the mayor.

?Good idea. Why struggle to get information about your children?s education if you don?t have to?? said Bree Altsman of Battery Park City.

?I actually think it might be very helpful, absolutely I do,? added parent Leslie Prodenzano. ?If it?s going to make education and our school systems better, why not??

One of the mayor?s biggest objections is that parents can only get evaluations for those teachers who currently teach their kids. If they want to find out about teachers whose classes their kids might have the following year, they?re plumb out of luck.

Do you like what the mayor is planning to do? Please offer your thoughts in the comments section below ?
