Romney is fuming.

"With the Blood of Reagan, I could warn against the perils of Big Government spending, while raising the debt ceiling 18 times," he says. "I could reform Social Security and Medicare without decimating them."

Romney looks up. "I could be the national father figure everyone craves -- not a guy from a Land's End catalog."

"Yes, Governor, we're aware."

"So why can't I just give them a million dollars for it? For god's sake, how many Super PACs do I have?"

"If word got out that you offered a million dollars for the Blood of Reagan, when the highest offer is under $10 thousand," Fehrnstrom says, "you'd look as out of touch with the middle class as when you bet Rick Perry during the middle of a debate."

"Is that so, Etch-a-Sketch?" Romney sneers. "I want that blood."

"But what if there's a trend? I'm not sure we want to risk having the Tea Party trying to dig up the Founding Fathers," Gillespie says. "I mean -- literally."

"The Blood of Reagan means a landslide victory," Romney says, sounding envious. "And invasions that only last a weekend!"

"But there's something else," Fehrnstrom says. He shifts uncomfortably. "It could turn you into a Democrat."

"How so?"

"Well, Obama in many ways is just a 90's era Republican -- especially on defense. And he killed bin Laden. So you've got to play to the right of that," Gillespie says. "Having you on both sides of every issue just hasn't been working."

Fehrnstrom nods. "With Santorum's anti-women crusade, Tea Party fundamentalism and Boehner's campaign of contrarianism, America's been pulled so far to the right, that the Blood of Reagan would shift you left on the political spectrum -- once and for all!"

"Is that really so bad, for the former governor of Massachusetts?" Romney looks momentarily thoughtful. "I mean, I hate having to disavow Romneycare."

Fehrnstrom looks alarmed. "Think about it! The Blood of Reagan turns the Republican presidential candidate into a Democrat? You can't do it! The party would finally collapse in on itself! The Republican narrative can't take any more blows!"

The room goes quiet.

"What would it look like," Romney asks softly, "if I turned Democrat?"

"It wouldn't look too different," the Gillespie says. "First, you'd hear yourself apologizing for attacking that gay kid, and supporting gay marriage."

"But it wouldn't be too bad," Gillespie says. "You'd still have record numbers of lobbyists. Indefinite detentions. And you'd still have drones."

Romney thinks for a moment. "But if Gingrich gets the blood? Before Tampa?"

"We spin it as a transparent attempt to manipulate the memory of a pillar of the Republican party, when being Republican meant bringing down Communism without firing a shot, it meant uniting the country during times of national tragedy, not dividing it, and it meant putting the public interest over political sabotage."

"Besides, it could turn Gingrich into a Democrat, too," says Gillespie, "just when he needs to get back on the lecture and punditry circuit. He hasn't got the nerve."

"What if we get the blood, but hold off on using it unless we really need to?" Romney asks. "Just so it doesn't fall into the wrong hands."

Fehrnstrom exhales.

"We can do that," he says. "We'll send someone to the U.K. today. We don't want the Obama people making a move."

Romney speaks quietly, but with conviction. "I could really use that blood."

IMF urges Britain to cut interest rates, resume QE

The IMF on Tuesday urged the Bank of England to cut interest rates and pump more cash into the recession-hit economy, which has been hit hard by the debt crisis in major trading partner the eurozone.

The International Monetary Fund also warned that Britain's coalition government needed to be prepared to cut taxation and increase infrastructure spending, should the recovery fade or the eurozone crisis worsen.

"Further monetary easing is required" for Britain to secure a "sustainable economic recovery", the IMF said in its annual report on the nation's economy.

"Monetary stimulus can be provided via further quantitative easing (QE) and possibly cutting the policy rate."

The BoE's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) slashed interest rates to the current record low of 0.50 percent in March 2009, when it also launched its radical QE policy aimed at stimulating the economy.

Under QE, the central bank has so far pumped the economy with ?325 billion of new cash by purchasing assets such as government and corporate bonds with the aim of giving a boost to lending.

"Evidence suggests that QE can continue to support demand by lowering long-term interest rates and improving banks' liquidity," the IMF said Tuesday.

"The MPC should also reassess the efficacy of cutting the policy rate below its current level of 0.50 percent."

The economy clawed its way out of a fierce downturn in late 2009 but has since struggled to recover, and slid back into recession in the final quarter of 2011 on the back of the eurozone crisis and state austerity.

The IMF added the government may need to further slow the pace of its tough austerity measures to lift the growth amid the risk of a major eurozone "shock".

"If the economy turns out to be significantly weaker than forecast, fiscal easing should be considered," said IMF managing director Christine Lagarde.

"Measures should be focused on supporting growth and employment."

The fund's report noted unemployment stood at 8.2 percent while output was more than 4.0 percent below its pre-crisis peak, but still predicted a modest return to growth in the second half of 2012 provided Europe's crisis eases.

"Unfortunately economic recovery in the UK has not yet taken hold and stresses abound," Lagarde told reporters, warning of the risk that low growth could become "entrenched".

But, she said, "I shiver" to think of "what the situation would be now had not fiscal consolidation taken place" after May 2010, when the current Conservative-led coalition won power.

"There's no question that fiscal consolidation measures across Europe have improved the credibility of countries that have adopted them," she said.

The IMF stressed that the eurozone crisis remained the biggest risk to Britain's economy, as the 17-nation bloc struggles to develop viable ways to keep debt-stricken Greece in the single currency.

Economists praised the IMF's assessment, particularly after official data showed that inflation fell sharply last month in a development which could also pave the way for more QE.

Britain's 12-month inflation rate dropped to 3.0 percent in April from 3.5 percent in March -- reaching the lowest level since February 2010 -- on lower transport, clothing and food costs.

"The IMF's calls for new policies to bolster demand are entirely appropriate," said Chris Scicluna, head of economic research at Daiwa Capital Markets Europe Ltd in London.

"After today's inflation data reassuringly showed a marked decline on the month, we would now expect the BoE to move to increase its asset purchase programme soon, most probably at its July meeting.

"And if the crisis in the euro area escalates into something far more virulent, then the BoE might need to be very aggressive indeed in its easing."

Alistair Cotton, corporate dealer at foreign exchange group Currencies Direct, agreed.

"The fall in inflation certainly helps the BoE to manoeuvre into more QE, especially given the major headwinds expected to UK growth as a knock on effect of the euro crisis," he told AFP.

This past weekend I attended the 12th Annual Women?s Health and Fitness Expo (Theme: Weight Loss for Wellness: Lose Weight, Feel Great) at Miller Middle School in Lake Katrine, NY., headed by Dr. Debra Karnasciewicz, founder and director of the not-for-profit Women?s Health and Fitness Foundation and the Expo.

The event focused on lifestyle changes we need to put into practice in order to get healthy and maintain good health.? There were booths with everything from health care, health screenings, fitness demos, spa services make up and foods to complimentary healing sessions.? There were also many sample stations for healthy type snack foods.

There were presentations offered throughout the day on subjects such as benefits of maintaining your ideal weight for health and wellness, heart and brain health, 10 minute solutions and many many other subjects relating to weight loss and wellness.

If you can?t get to a gym or if it?s raining, snowing or just too cold out you can always find time to do a 10 minute workout.? In the auditorium, we used our own body weight by doing squats, leg lifts, knee lifts, tricep dips and many other fun yet effective exercises to work every muscle group to help create weight loss as well as a healthier lifestyle.

At her lecture she also spoke about fidgeting and I was intrigued because I just read an article/study about this last week.? I remember thinking I should be a toothpick if this one is true.? She said by incorporating fidgeting throughout your day or even just standing every once in a while if you work at a desk job you will burn a significant amount of calories per day.? I do tend to fidget every now and then so I liked hearing this one.? When I?m alone I will do my best to fidget more.? I never thought those words would come out of my mouth.? All my childhood years and even some adult years people would hold my knee to stop me from fidgeting.? If that ever happens again I?ll remind the person I am purposely burning extra calories. Hee hee!? I love that one.? Fidgeting now has a new meaning for me and I like it.

As she shared the other 10 minute solutions it really made sense.? We can change our lifestyle just by adding short bursts of exercise or wellness into our regimen.? The term ?you have to make this a lifestyle change? is sometimes scary to my clients, friends and family but she put it in a way that makes it seem easier and fun.? So I suggest you do something new for 10 minutes today whether it?s taking 10 minutes to be totally alone, meditating, cleaning, playing, exercising, or preparing a meal for the day.? Whatever you do, have fun with it and know you are working towards a healthier you and a lifestyle change won?t seem so challenging anymore.

Girl Scouts try to allay church suspicions

The Girl Scouts organization is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, but the party has been spoiled somewhat by an official inquiry from the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.

The bishops want clarification of the Scouts? relationship with groups whose goals contradict Catholic Church doctrine on sexuality.

The ?possible problematic relationships with other organizations? mentioned in a March 28 letter from the bishop leading the investigation are not spelled out, but relate to a long-held belief by conservatives that the Girl Scouts are connected to Planned Parenthood, the family planning and women?s health organization demonized by many religious conservatives as the center of the ?abortion industry.?

Any rift between the Catholic Church and the Girl Scouts could be awkward. The group estimates that Catholics make up about one-fourth of its membership, which nationwide amounts to 2.3 million girls and 890,000 adults, mostly volunteers .

?We work with all faiths. We are very inclusive,? said Lisa Johnson, spokeswoman for Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida, an 18,000-member regional council that comprises Palm Beach, Broward and four other counties. ?It feels like guilt by association.?

Girl Scouts leaders have consistently denied any relationship with Planned Parenthood, but anti-abortion websites continue to trumpet the relationship.

The bishops? inquiry amounts to a religious investigation of an organization that its leaders say has been steadfastly nonreligious and nonpartisan since it was founded in 1912. The letter was written by the Rev. Kevin Rhoades, chairman of the bishops? Committee on Laity, Marriage, Family Life and Youth, and the bishop in charge of the investigation.

Rhoades? letter follows a complaint by Indiana state Rep. Bob Morris, who wrote to his colleagues depicting the Girl Scouts as a radical group that promotes abortions and homosexuality. The Republican lawmaker later apologized for ?reactionary and inflammatory? comments, but stood by his contention that the group has links to Planned Parenthood.

The bishops? inquiry into the Girl Scouts might seem to non-Catholics to be an attack on women similar to the Vatican?s announcement last month that it was censuring a prominent group of American nuns for ?radical feminism.? But the American bishops also are re-?evaluating relationships with other organizations.

The group insists its relationship with the Catholic Church remains cordial.

?I see no problem with people asking questions,? said Michelle Tompkins, national spokeswoman for Girl Scouts of the USA. ?We will address any issues they have.?

A ?very vocal minority?

The specifics date back years and can be linked to groups with social or religious agendas critical of the Girl Scouts .

?Some people are seeking outrage. There is a very vocal minority saying things that aren?t true. But we?re not angry (at the bishops? investigation). We?re happy to work with them,? Tompkins said. ?We have priests as board members in local communities. We?re not worried about them going away.?

Girl Scouts of the USA officials, including CEO Anna Maria Chavez, a Catholic, repeatedly underline their intention to cooperate and to get beyond the controversy. And although it?s a secular organization, it embraces partnerships with religious groups. Scouts can earn a ?My Promise, My Faith? pin for activities linked to their religious beliefs.

Accusations, which the group has denied for years, keep looping around on anti-abortion and anti-Girl Scout websites. It is those accusations that the bishops are investigating.

?Quit the Girl Scouts over their Planned Parenthood connection? is the headline on a 2011 blog on Lifenews.com, an anti-abortion website.

?The Girl Scouts are directly affiliated with Planned Parenthood, our country?s largest abortion provider,? wrote blogger Abby Johnson, who described herself as a former Planned Parenthood employee. ?Planned Parenthood put out a brochure entitled, ?Happy, Healthy and Hot,? distributed to thousands of Girl Scouts. The intended audience is girls aged 8-16.?

The blog?s contention is ?beyond false,? Tompkins said.

?Some people have been throwing stones at us for years, people who may or may not be part of the faith-based community,? she said. ?It?s not the bishops. There is a difference between the fringe and (mainstream organizations). It?s a very vocal minority with their own agenda. They know that if you attack an organization with our stellar reputation, you might get a headline. The Catholic Church is smart enough to realize what these people are doing.?

Ironically, an anti-?abortion website ? unlike the Girl Scouts ? is not answerable to the bishops if it does not identify itself as Catholic.

The Vatican also takes issue with several groups the Scouts endorse, including Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam. Those organizations offer medical and other social services to the poor, but also advocate safe sex and condom use, with the goal of slowing AIDS.

One of the long-running concerns is the Girl Scouts? membership in the 145-nation World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, which, unlike Girl Scouts of the USA, takes a frank stand in favor of sexual education for girls.

The association has said that girls and young women ?need an environment where they can freely and openly discuss issues of sex and sexuality.?

One solution would be for Girl Scouts of the USA to sever its ties with the Girl Guides, but that is where the Scouts group has drawn the line.

?Our relationship to (the Girl Guides) is akin to America?s relationship with the United Nations,? Tompkins said.

No stand on sexuality

Ironically, Girl Scouts of the USA?s strict policy of not taking political and social positions, including on sexuality, birth control and abortion, seems to be one of the things that most vexes its critics, who might prefer that the organization take a position .

?We just don?t take positions,? said Tompkins, referring to the national Girl Scouts organization. ?This annoys people on both sides. They say, ?Why aren?t you doing this or that?? But one of the great things is that we have a lot of flexibility to suit our members. We give the girls the power to take a position. To some, that?s a problem in itself. A lot of the Girl Scouts? critics do not accept our position on these issues.?

The bishops? investigation will have to deal with Girl Scout activities at the local level as well as the national level.

Each of the 112 regional councils of Girl Scouts of the USA is independently registered and can address any issues its members and leaders choose, as long as parents are fully informed .

For example, Girl Scouts of the USA has ?no programming regarding human sexuality,? Tompkins said. ?That just isn?t part of us. Sexuality really isn?t our bailiwick. That?s best shared by the family. But that?s not to say that a local troop won?t choose to do that.?

If a local troop addresses a social issue such as human sexuality, permission slips go home to parents spelling out exactly what is going on and giving them an opt-out for their daughters, Tompkins said.

Rhoades? committee plans to consult with Girl Scouts leaders and with the National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, which has been a liason with the Scouts for two years .

The federation?s executive director, Bob McCarty, praised the Girl Scouts for willingness to change some program content.

?I don?t think any of this material was intentionally mean-spirited,? McCarty said. ?I think a lot of it was lack of attention.?

However, McCarty expressed doubt that the Girl Scouts? most vehement critics would be satisfied regardless of what steps are taken.

?It?s easier to step back and throw verbal bombs,? he said. ?It takes a lot more energy to work for change.?
