Richardson notes that he has been

many Muslims have a faith in the
coming Mahdi, especially that there
are a significant number who believe
that will happen soon.
The survey by Pew Research notes
that in the Middle East, North Africa,
South Asia and Southeast Asia, ?half
or more Muslims believe they will live
to see the return of the Mahdi. This
expectation is most widespread in
Afghanistan (83 percent), Iraq (72
percent), Tunisia (67 percent) and
Malaysia (62 percent).
The survey said that belief drops to
about four-in-10 across Central Asia,
except for Turkey, where 68 percent
expect to witness his return. It drops
slightly further across southern and
eastern Europe.
?In some countries with sizable Sunni
and Shi?a populations, views on the
Mahdi?s return differ by sect. In Iraq,
for example, Shi?as are more likely
than Sunnis to expect the Mahdi to
return in their lifetime, by an 88
percent to 55 percent margin. In
Azerbaijan, the difference between
the two groups is also large (25
percentage points),? the report said.
?Differences between Shi?as and
Sunnis on this issue may reflect the
more central role that the Mahdi?s
return plays in Shi?a Islam.?
The result? An estimated 672 million
Muslims expect to witness the Mahdi?s
return.

Britain welcomes S.Africa probe into mine shootings

Britain on Saturday said it welcomed an investigation into the police killing of 34 striking workers at a South African platinum mine, while expressing its shock at the deaths.

"We are shocked by the loss of life at the Marikana mine in South Africa and send our condolences to the friends and family of all those who have died or been affected," the Foreign Office said in a statement.

"We welcome the commitment of the South African government to resolving the situation through dialogue.

"We further welcome President (Jacob) Zuma's announcement of a Commission of Inquiry, as well as National Police Commissioner General Riah Phiyega's confirmation that the South African Police Service would co-operate fully with an investigation into these tragic events."

South Africa on Saturday sought answers following the deadliest protest since apartheid.

Armoured cars and police trucks patrolled the area around London-listed Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine while a helicopter circled above the spot where officers opened fire on hundreds of workers Thursday.

More than 1,000 miners were gathered nearby, many still traumatised by the incident, while others trickled into the mine's hospital hoping to find out if missing loved ones were dead, wounded or in jail.

The crackdown Thursday left 34 dead, 78 wounded and 259 detained, according to police.

The toll came on top of 10 dead in attacks blamed on rivalry between unions during the weeklong strike to back demands for a wage rise.

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syria's state-run TV aired footage of President Bashar Assad performing Eid prayers in a mosque in Damascus on Sunday, his first appearance in public after a bombing in the Syrian capital last month that killed the country's defense minister and three other top security officials.

Assad was shown praying at the city's Rihab al-Hamad Mosque to mark the start of Eid al-Fitr, a three-day holiday that follows the holy month of Ramadan. The last time Assad appeared in public was on July 4 when he gave a speech in parliament.

Since then, there has been a sharp escalation in the country's civil war with almost daily fighting in some districts of the capital between security forces and rebels seeking to topple Assad.

The Syrian regime has suffered a series of setbacks over the past month that point to a loosening of its grip on the country.

The July 18 rebel bombing of the state-security headquarters in the capital was a major blow to Assad. His brother-in-law was among the five killed offcials.

There has also been a steady stream of high-level defections by government officials, diplomats and generals, though Assad's inner circle and military have largely kept their cohesive stance behind him. And the regime has been unable to fully subdue rebel challenges in the two major cities, Damascus and Aleppo.

Assad's appearance comes amid much speculation on the whereabouts of Vice President Farouk al-Sharaa, who was said by some members of the Free Syrian Army to have defected to the opposition. On Saturday, his office denied the reports and said al-Sharaa "did not think, at any moment, of leaving the country."

Al-Sharaa did not appear in the footage at the mosque with Assad.

Pakistan frees 55 Indians for independence day

Pakistan on Wednesday released 55 Indian fishermen, 15 of them teenagers, as a "goodwill gesture" to mark independence day in India.

The release is part of an understanding between the nuclear-armed rivals to free citizens who mistakenly stray into each other's waters.

"Some 55 Indian fishermen have been released from our jail on the instructions of the government," said Nazeer Husain Shah, superintendent of Malir district prison in Karachi.

"Those released include 15 teenage boys," he told AFP.

The Indians were presented with flowers and gifts, then bused to the eastern city of Lahore, from where they would cross the Wagah border.

Officials say 100 Indian fishermen are still in Pakistani jails and 250 Pakistanis in Indian prisons.

Ayaz Soomro, law minister for the southern province of Sindh on the Arabian Sea, said the releases were "a goodwill gesture".

"We hope our neighbours reciprocate in the same spirit and release Pakistani prisoners from their jails," he said.

India and Pakistan have fought three wars since independence in 1947, two of them over the Himalayan region of Kashmir, which is divided by a heavily militarised Line of Control and which both countries claim in full.

Last year they resumed their tentative peace process, which collapsed after Islamist gunmen from Pakistan killed 166 people in Mumbai in November 2008.

Meadowhell is the first in CD Comics? Surreal Murder Mystery series, and comes with a warning: This story could change the way you shop forever! Set in 1990, just before the opening of Meadowhall, one of the biggest shopping centres in the UK, Meadowhell tells the story of why its opening was delayed. 3 bodies have been discovered on the site of Sheffield?s new shopping complex, and the circumstances surrounding the deaths have the local constabulary more than baffled. Enter DCI Bramley, assigned to the case from the Metropolitan police.

Another superbly written comic from Craig Daley, Meadowhell unravels like a Yorkshire based X-Files. The mysterious, gruesome demise of each of the victims is something out of the ordinary, with no plausible explanation, and while DCI Bramley delves deeper into the killings, things make less and less sense. Intentional or not, I can?t help but draw comparisons to the 90?s sci-fi TV show, be it some of the characters or the weird goings on in the soon to be opened shopping mall. And while it does share that?similarity to the show, it also plays out like a typical British detective drama too, with the larger than life, and somewhat stereotypical english law enforcement. The bizarre ending is amusingly macabre, with an all too knowing mockery of subtext so blunt it would be worthy of an episode of The Scary Door!?The art, once again, looks like it?s been knocked together on Paint, yet really stands out and is actually very good. There?s great detail and a sometimes vibrant colour pallet, it?s deceptively brilliant.

While Meadowhell wasn?t as entertaining as the more recent Football Crazy, it?s still a great read, with another out there conclusion. Good luck trying to second guess the outcome of this one, as with aforementioned Football Crazy, it ends in such an amusingly bizarre way that seemingly just comes from nowhere. Daley?s unique, dry wit is the highlight of his writing. He may write great stories, but when it comes to the closing pages, there?s no one else to compare. Spread across two issues, Meadowhell is a more serious fare, with a dark sense of humour, and along with the other Surreal Murder Mystery story, features the local area as an additional character of sorts. So far, CD Comics output has been nothing but a treat to read, with Meadowhell being no exception. Another cult gem.

Groupon Crashes To A New All-Time Low... - Business Insider

The Groupon disaster keeps getting worse.

After reporting disappointing earnings and a disappointing outlook, the stock has crashed nearly 25% to a new all-time low of ~$5.80.

That's 70% below last winter's IPO price of $20. And it's 80% below the opening-day high of about $30.

The market's expectations for the company at the IPO were silly, but the magnitude and speed of the subsequent collapse has still been startling. Especially considering that Groupon is now doing what many skeptics said it could never do, which is making money.

At $5.80, Groupon has a market capitalization of about $3.75 billion.

Netting out the company's current payables, it has "net cash" of about $600 million.

So that means the business itself is valued at about $3 billion, or about 1.5X run-rate revenue.

That's a low valuation for a profitable company that is still growing.

So, is Groupon a buy here?

Maybe, but several aspects of the results fueled concerns that Groupon still hasn't found a "floor."

These concerns include:

• The core business--selling coupons--is now shrinking.
• Gross billings--the total value of all the stuff and coupons Groupon sells--is now shrinking, at least before adjusting for foreign exchange rates
• The company's now modest growth is coming from a new business, selling stuff, which has less attractive cash-flow characteristics and lower margins
• Groupon's effort to become profitable has led to drastic cuts in marketing costs, and these are hurting the company's growth. This transition--from hyper-growth to steady growth with profitability--likely has a ways to go.
• The company's management team and board continues to turn over, with early backers like Howard Schultz leaving
• The future viability and attractiveness of the company's core business, coupon sales, is now in doubt. Until Groupon demonstrates that merchants and customers love its service and will keep buying even with no marketing, this will remain a question.

Put all that together, and investors are justifiably wondering whether Groupon will ever achieve a state of steady, profitable growth.

(For what it's worth, I still think it will. But there will likely be several more quarters of pain before we get there.)

Michael Kenneth Williams in Talks for RoboCop

Fan-favorite Michael Kenneth Williams is negotiating to join the cast of?Jos? Padilha?s RoboCop reboot. The actor will break from his tradition playing men who subscribe to a strict moral code (but live on the wrong side of the law) on HBO?s The Wire and Boardwalk Empire, by tackling the role of a Detroit police officer and Alex J. Murphy?s partner in the Padilha film.

Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) is taking over for Peter Weller as Alex Murphy, while Williams is filling the shoes previously worn by Nancy Allen in the original RoboCop movie trilogy. The latter is working on Twelve Years a Slave,?Steve McQueen?s followup to his critically-acclaimed NC-17 drama Shame. Williams will thereafter join the RoboCop crew for the beginning of principal photography in Toronto next month.

Heat Vision describes Williams? RoboCop character as someone ?who is tight with Murphy?s family.? Previous reports indicate that Murphy?s grieving partner begins a relationship with his wife (Abbie Cornish) after Murphy is savagely attacked in the line of duty, verges on the precipice of death ? and re-emerges a remarkable fusion of man and machine, thanks to the efforts of an OmniCorp scientist (Gary Oldman). That sets the stage for the film?s central conflict, as the cyborg Murphy desperately clings to his lingering traces of humanity despite the wishes of his conglomerate overlord (Hugh Laurie).

Padilha describes the dramatic essence of his RoboCop reboot as ?a man being turned into a product by a corporation? and indicates his film updates the Reagan-era political atmosphere of Paul Verhoeven?s original 1987 sci-fi movie for a post-9/11 context. The second coming of RoboCop still features the satirical elements of its predecessor, but pushes Murphy?s existential dilemma to the forefront.?It?s a thoughtful approach that?s helped in attracting excellent acting talent to Padilha?s (semi)controversial remake.

The RoboCop movie franchise has been out of commission for nearly twenty years, ever since RoboCop 3 opened to poor reviews and weak returns at the box office. It?s one of three major sci-fi properties established by Verhoeven, alongside Total Recall and Starship Troopers.?A remake of the former is in theaters, while the latter is in the process of getting a gentler facelift. Total Recall 2.0 carries over elements from its ancestor, but is overall an independent creation (see our Total Recall: 2012 vs 1990 vs? 1966 breakdown).

RoboCop (the reboot), by comparison, updates the social issues of Verhoeven?s film, but functions as more of an alternate take on the same subject matter ? examining such relevant matters as the increasingly centralized role technology occupies in millions of people?s lives (and how that affects their perception of the world). Fans are slowly warming to the idea; whether or not moviegoing masses will turn out, remains to be seen.

The RoboCop supporting cast is rounded out by Samuel L. Jackson, Jackie Earle Haley, and Jennifer Ehle, working from the latest script draft penned by James Vanderbilt (The Losers, Amazing Spider-Man).

Look for RoboCop to open in U.S. theaters on August 9th, 2013.

Body found in truck near Salinas Sports Complex

A body was found Monday morning inside a locked truck after the truck was towed from the Salinas Sports Complex to a demolition yard, police said.

The cold storage truck that was parked near the Salinas Sports Complex had been converted into a makeshift home, and police said they believe a man who was found dead had been living inside it.

Investigators said the?truck was locked from the inside and they found a shotgun near the body. The man's death is being investigated as a suicide.?

"The body had been in the trailer for a long period of time -- several months to even a few years based on the state of decomposition," police officer?Miguel Cabrera said.

His family filed a missing person report more than a year ago, police said.?

"The trailer had been locked from the inside, using padlocks and a chain. The keys to the padlocks were found inside the trailer, indicating the victim would lock himself in the trailer,"?Cabrera said.

The body was discovered because the truck was towed from the Salinas Sports Complex to a demolition yard to be destroyed. Henningsen Construction workers broke the truck's door open.

"Workers for the construction company had to cut a chain that was keeping the only entrance to the trailer closed. Once inside, the workers found the body of an adult male lying inside the trailer,"?Cabrera said.

The first song that makes you think of him. the first time ?you lose all senses when your hands touch. The first?late night?stroll?to unknown destinations while gazing upon the moon. The first time he says ?I love you?. I?m certain that just the mention of is making you?think?of those first, just as I am while writing this.

Those moments stay fresh in the mind and all you can think of is forever with him. But how would you feel if someone told you that your love had an expiration date? That no matter what you did to foster communication and understanding that because of your sexuality, This love was on a clock that weould soon run out?

A few years ago in?Time?a man dissected his relationship with his partner to see if then being gay is what led to it?s downfall. The author ridiculously implies that through research that his relationship faltered because of their sexuality.What I find difficult to understand is did he ever question were the problems due to sexuality, or his absurd notion of what roles we serve in our relationships as gay men and women? To me, ?it sounds like trying to be what he thought ?one man has a dominant role while the other submissive is flawed.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Grasping for an election advantage, President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney cast Friday's newest round of economic data in starkly different ways. Obama heralded more signs of slow, if steady, job growth. Romney said the uptick in the unemployment rate was a "hammer blow" to the middle class.

Both candidates sought to score political points in the hours after the Labor Department said the economy added 163,000 jobs in July, marking the best pace of hiring in five months. The jobless rate rose slightly, however, to 8.3 percent, from 8.2 percent in June.

Obama's electoral prospects in November depend in large part on convincing Americans that he has put an economy once on the brink of a depression on the path to growth, however sluggish that growth may be. He touted a 29th straight month of private sector job growth, but acknowledged there were still too many people without jobs.

"We've still got too many folks out there looking for work," he said during an event at the White House. "We've got more work to do on their behalf."

In a subtle plea for a second term, Obama said: "We knew when I started this job that this was going to take some time."

Romney, running for the presidency on his record as a successful businessman, said Friday's numbers were "not just statistics" and underscored the real struggles people across the country are facing. He blamed Obama's health care law and burdensome regulations.

"Those policies, we know where they lead," Romney said. "They lead to an America that is not as strong as it must be for ourselves, for our children and for the world."

Obama and Romney spoke simultaneously from opposite sides of the country.

The president was flanked at the White House by the kind of people he says would benefit from his push to extend tax cuts for the middle class while allowing cuts for upper income earners to expire. Romney spoke at a truck equipment company in Nevada, the state with the nation's highest unemployment rate.

The July jobs report exceeded the expectations of economists, who predicted there would be about 100,000 jobs created.

It also was a vast improvement from recent jobs reports. From April through June, the economy produced an average of 75,000 jobs a month, the weakest three months since August through October 2010.

But the July growth was well below the average 252,000 jobs a month added from December through February.

The economy remains the top issue for voters less than three months before Election Day.

While the overall race for the White House remains deadlocked, several polls show Romney with an advantage over Obama on economic issues. A USA Today/Gallup Poll conducted in late July found 50 percent of Americans said Romney is the candidate who would be better at job creation, with 44 percent siding with Obama.

Obama sought to shift quickly Friday from the issue of jobs to taxes. He renewed his call for Congress to extend tax cuts only for families making less than $250,000 before they expire at the end of the year.

The president made no mention of his Republican rival during his remarks but took a veiled swipe at Romney, noting that extending tax cuts for families earning under $250,000 a year would still apply, in part, to the very wealthy. Romney's fortune has been estimated at $250 million.

"We're saying nobody's income taxes go up on the first $250,000 of their income, so even somebody who makes more than $250 (thousand) is getting a tax break on their first $250 (thousand)," Obama said. "You understand? Even somebody who is worth $200 million."

Obama's campaign has turned its tax debate with Romney personal in recent days. The campaign is running a television advertisement in battleground states dinging Romney for paying a lower tax rate than many Americans.

"He pays less, you pay more," the ad says.

Romney paid about 14 percent of his 2010 income in taxes. His rate in other years is unknown because he has not released additional tax returns. Some Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., have suggested there may have been some years where Romney didn't pay any taxes at all.

The presumptive GOP nominee sought to put an end to that speculation Friday.

"Let me also say, categorically: I have paid taxes every year. And a lot of taxes," Romney said during a rare media availability with reporters.

Romney's own tax plan calls for extending the cuts first enacted by Republican President George W. Bush for all income earners, and dropping all tax rates further, by 20 percent. Romney also announced an economic plan this week that he said would create 12 million U.S. jobs in four years.

Romney's plan for job growth included several broad ideas but few specifics. He said he would help small business owners, cut spending to reduce the deficit and cut taxes.
