Google Science Fair Winner Discusses Her Project

Robert Siegel speaks with Shree Bose, the winner of this year's Google Science Fair. Bose investigated why cancer cells become resistant to the chemotherapy drug Cisplatin. Through her research, she discovered a specific protein that makes cancer cells resistant to the drug.

ROBERT SIEGEL, HOST:

Of course, the U.S. is also known for exporting another precious commodity: Ideas. And all this week, we're exploring the ideas of young innovators, people who've made advances in the fields of science and technology before they are old enough to vote.

And today, a teenage cancer researcher, 17-year-old Shree Bose. This past summer, Shree Bose took home the grand prize at the inaugural Google Global Science Fair. Her project was researching ways to make a more effective cancer-killer. And she joins us now online from Fort Worth, Texas. Welcome to the program. Congratulations.

SHREE BOSE: Thank you.

SIEGEL: And I'd like you to describe for us, in a nutshell, what you did about chemotherapy and cells that become resistant to chemotherapy.

BOSE: In a nutshell, my project was about drug-resistance in ovarian cancer. And basically what happens is that when patients are diagnosed with cancer, they go in for chemotherapy treatment, which is basically giving patients really high doses of chemicals to try and kill off cancer cells. Which works great most of the time. But sometimes, years after they've been declared cancer-free patients come back with a recurrence of the same cancer that they had before.

And this time, they're resistant to the drug. You can't treat with the same treatment option, so you have to turn towards radiation therapy and different types of chemotherapy drugs. So, basically, my project was trying to figure out exactly how these cancer says were becoming resistant to one particular chemotherapy drug.

SIEGEL: And you actually identified a factor that could be at work here.

BOSE: Yes, we did. We found that one protein in the cell, AMP-kinase, which is an energy protein, shifts its function from sensitive cells to resistant cells. And it actually might be changing the cell along with it to make those cells resistant. And if we can target that, we can actually treat resistant patients again, which is huge for chemotherapy and huge for future research.

SIEGEL: Now, how did you become interested in cancer research?

BOSE: After my freshman year actually, my grandfather passed away due to cancer and I just decided that I wanted to see what research was going on, what was out there. And I decided that I wanted to get involved in cancer research. So, I started emailing all of these professors in my area, asking to work under their supervision.

And I got rejected by all except one. And then I went in to work with Dr. Basu at the UNT Health Science Center here in Fort Worth. And that's where my cancer research story began.

SIEGEL: So that was the beginning of your young career as a cancer researcher. But you were already involved in science fair projects for quite a while.

BOSE: It was. I've been involved in science fairs since I was in second grade. My first project was trying to turn spinach blue with food coloring to make it more appetizing to little kids. And it just grew from there. And at 15, I was doing cancer research. So, it was a nice step.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

SIEGEL: Did you have cooperative little kids who would eat the blues spinach?

BOSE: Actually, I killed off the spinach plant before it actually grew. So...

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

BOSE: It didn't work out so well for me.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

SIEGEL: So, your project has gotten a lot more sophisticated than that.

BOSE: Exactly.

SIEGEL: Shree, do you remember a time when you were very little, when something that your parents showed you or took you to, or told you about inspired you to want to do science?

BOSE: I think my biggest influence in science has actually been my older brother, Pinaki Bose. He's 19, smartest kid I know. And just throughout my entire life he's always been there to teach me things and to show me how exciting and interesting science could be. So, I owe a lot of my success to him and I'm really lucky to have him in my life.

SIEGEL: And your plans for your own education? You're now senior in high school?

BOSE: Yes, senior in high school - last year. I'm hoping to go on to do an undergraduate degree in biology and hopefully pursue premed. I was accepted early to Harvard, so that's one of my options. But I'm applying to a lot really, really great schools like Stanford and Johns Hopkins. And so, hopefully I'll end up somewhere great, and I'll be able to pursue future research and hopefully go into the medical field.

SIEGEL: I suspect you'll do just fine.

(SOUNDBITE OF LAUGHTER)

SIEGEL: That's Shree Bose. She's the grand prize winner of this year's Google Global Science Fair for her research into cancer treatment. She spoke to us from Fort Worth, Texas. Shree, thank you very much.

BOSE: Thank you for having me.

Police investigating burglary at Buffalo-area church

Posted at: 12/28/2011 4:14 AM

nullPolice in Niagara County are investigating a burglary at the Pendleton Center United Methodist Church.

Pastor Tom Kraft says someone broke in sometime between Christmas night and Monday morning and stole all of the cash from the Christmas collections, estimated between $20,000 and $25,000.

The church staff usually deposits the weekend collection immediately following the service. But the staff was unable to do so on Saturday because it was Christmas Eve and banks were closed.

Kraft says the holiday collection is about two to three times the normal weekend offering at the church and was destined for mission causes.

The thief was apparently able to get through one locked door and then smashed in two other doors to get to the room where the money is kept. Police believe the suspect was familiar with the church and might have even had a key.

Automatic backups coming to Windows Phone

Anyone that's suffered data loss will know how much of a lifesaver backups are. To the average user, backups can get tedious and intrusive, so modern day systems have been geared towards making the process as simple as possible.

Enter Windows Phone 7. Currently, the OS doesn't have an auto backup feature (unless you turn to the homebrew scene), but a recent job posting looks like that's all set to change. WMPU has uncovered a listing for a Software Engineer to join Redmond's?Windows Phone Backup, Migrate and Restore team.

The listing reads:

Come join the Windows Phone Backup, Migrate, and Restore team. Our goal is to ensure that no matter if someone loses their phone, drops their phone in a lake, buys a new windows phone, or just has their toddler wipe their phone by entering the wrong PIN over and over, a user can quickly and seamlessly get their phone back to a good state. The features we are producing will be new for the next version of Windows Phone and will help ensure Microsoft stays ahead of the competition when it comes to disaster recovery.

The keywords here are "quickly and seamlessly". With Apple's iCloud and Google's web offerings making most phone data recovery pretty straightforward, Microsoft has got a fair bit to live up to. If they can come up with something unobtrusive and simple, they may be onto another winning feature.

Interested in the job? You can read the full listing and apply directly to Microsoft here.

Japan probe finds nuclear disaster response failed (AP)

TOKYO ? A Japanese government report has found that the response to the nuclear crisis that followed the March 11 tsunami was confused and filled with errors.

The report submitted Monday outlined a government investigation into the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant. The investigation will be finished by mid-2012.

The report found workers at Tokyo Electric Power Co. were untrained to handle emergencies like the power shutdown that struck when the tsunami destroyed backup generators ? setting off the world's worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl.

It also found that workers had mistakenly assumed an emergency cooling system had been working.

Nintendo 3DS news roundup: early 2012 lineup revealed, DLC coming, sales exceed 4 million in Japan (Digital Trends)

?

Nintendo-3DSWe?ve been a little light on Nintendo 3DS news lately, but things continue to look up for the once struggling handheld. Sources report that Nintendo will offer downloadable content (DLC) for the first time in 2012, hardware sales have eclipsed 4 million units in Japan, and Satoru Iwata has revealed Nintendo?s upcoming game lineup for early 2012.

DLC coming to Fire Emblem:?Nintendo added support for DLC within games in a system update earlier this year, but no games have been released that take advantage of the new functionality. That will soon change. According to Nikkei (via 1UP), Fire Emblem for 3DS will have some form of downloadable content in March. Third parties are expected to begin bringing paid DLC content to 3DS titles by summer. Wii U will also have paid DLC support.

3DS sales exceed 4 million in Japan: Enterbrain (via Famitsu) reports that Nintendo 3DS sales in Japan have exceeded 4 million units in only 10 months. The Nintendo DS, by comparison, reached 5 million units in its first 13 months, but it had two holiday seasons to boost those sales. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 have each sold more than 1 million copies.?

3DS 2012 Japan lineup: Nintendo President Satoru Iwata gave a direct broadcast over UStream the other day, where he revealed a few details about upcoming games, like Fire Emblem. Below is a list of games coming to the 3DS (in Japan) in the next few months.?

  • Ghost Camera ? Jan. 12
  • Ace Combat 3D ? Jan. 12
  • Rhythm Thief R ? Jan. 19
  • Beyond the Labyrinth ? Jan. 19
  • Resident Evil Revelations ? Jan. 26
  • Tekken 3D Prime Edition ? Feb. 16
  • Theatrhythm Final Fantasy ? Feb. 16
  • Harvest Moon: Hajimari no Daichi ? Feb. 23
  • New Love Plus ? Feb 24
  • Mario & Sonic at London Olympics ? March 1
  • Metal Gear Solid 3D ? March 8
  • Hatsune Miku and Future Stars Project Mirai ? March 8
  • Girl?s RPG (by Level-5) ? March 8
  • Dynasty Warriors VS ? March 15
  • Kid Icarus Uprising ? March 22
  • Fire Emblem: Awakening ? April 19

Not a bad lineup. Let?s hope the US release list is as robust. Do any of these games look good? I?m intrigued by a new Harvest Moon, though the series has been getting repetitive in recent years.?

To Write off a Debt As Last Resort

To write off a debt simply means that it will now be reported to a collection agency. Typically this occurs after 6 months of nonpayment. The company will record the expense as money that cannot be recovered. Each company has certain steps that they may follow prior to sending it out of the company to a collection agency. This action does have an adverse effect on your credit. Once the debt has been moved to a collection agency, the consumer then may have the option of having a reduced monthly bill, in some cases the bill itself is reduced in order to get the balance paid. However, the damage is already done it will appear on your credit record. It will show that you have a debt and that it has been transferred over to a collection agency. So as you can see trying to set up an arrangement with the company before it gets that far is preferable.

NBA: Derrick Rose Says He?s Still Not Over the Bulls Eastern Conference Finals Loss

On the eve of a new season,?Chicago Bulls?point guard?Derrick Rose?admitted that he still hasn?t completely gotten over the fact that his team lost in five games to the?Miami Heat?in the Eastern Conference finals last spring.? ?Read more after the jump.

@Shay_Marie x @gametimegirl

?I?m not over it yet,? he said before the Bulls? Saturday morning practice at UCLA. ?I?m still thinking about it. That was one of the things that is still driving me right now is wanting to be able to be in that position again to see what I?m going to do about it. I think I?ve been preparing myself for it, but we will have to see.?

Rose said he can still remember the disappointment he felt after the game that night.

?Walking off at the end, at the (United Center),? Rose said. ?Putting everything on me because I thought it was my fault and just working out this whole summer.?

?

Rose has said repeatedly this summer that he feels responsible for the Bulls? meltdown against Miami.

?

?I put a lot of pressure on myself,? he said. ?I had the ball 85, 90 percent of the time. I?m one of the leaders on the team, so to me it was my fault.?

?

Rose spent even more time in the gym working on his game with his personal trainer, Rob McClanaghan, this summer so that he wouldn?t have to feel the pain of losing again.

?

?(I) worked out a lot,? Rose said. ?Watched a lot of film. Just going over things. Just trying to be more efficient this year. Not turn the ball over. Those are one thing you can do to try to beat a team is eliminate the things that you?re doing so that you can have a greater chance of winning.?

(AP) ? Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger will not start Saturday when the Steelers face the St. Louis Rams.

Roethlisberger is dealing with a sprained left ankle and did not practice this week following a 20-3 loss to San Francisco on Monday. He will be replaced by veteran Charlie Batch, who is 4-2 as a spot starter since joining the Steelers in 2003.

Roethlisberger said Wednesday he would prefer to play and believed his ankle was in pretty good shape after throwing for 330 yards and three interceptions against the 49ers. Yet he watched both practices this week in sweat pants as Batch took the snaps with the first team.

Roethlisberger last missed a start due to injury in 2009, when a concussion forced him to sit out a loss to Baltimore.

UK's fairy shrimps under threat

Britain's endangered fairy shrimps are under threat as a dry autumn has affected the ponds they live in, a charity says.

Fairy shrimps are tiny translucent crustaceans, which usually hatch near Christmas.

But charity Pond Conservation says many of their pools may dry out completely.

Another problem is that some "transient" ponds are beginning to hold water permanently, allowing predatory fish to colonise them.

Pond Conservation's Dr Jeremy Biggs said: "With only a handful of sites across the whole of Britain, the future of these beautiful creatures is balanced on a knife-edge."

?Start Quote

The future of these beautiful creatures is balanced on a knife-edge?

End Quote Dr Jeremy Biggs Pond Conservation

It is that hoped fairy shrimps (Chirocephalus diaphanous), which are protected by the Wildlife and Countryside Act, will return to their "strongholds" this Christmas in Hampshire's New Forest, on the edge of Dartmoor in Devon, on Salisbury Plain, in parts of the Sussex Weald, as well as in Oxfordshire, East Anglia and South Wales.

They complete their life-cycle during the coldest part of the year, hatching as water returns to their shallow ponds, which dry out in summer.

They reach maturity over winter, then lay eggs, which can survive long periods of drought. The adults die when their ponds dry out in spring.

Dr Biggs said: "They are facing a double-whammy from pollution and changing weather patterns.

"We don't know whether they can survive in their existing habitats, so we have also been making special new seasonal clean water ponds for them to try to increase their numbers.

"We're hoping that by providing more habitat, we will increase their chances of surviving in the British countryside."

He says that, although Britain has half a million ponds, 80% of those in England and Wales are polluted.

Dr Biggs added: "We'd ask people to look out for them on their Christmas day walk, especially if they are walking past small pools in more natural parts of the countryside - in woods, or on heathland, for example."

4 personal finance technology trends for 2012 (AP)

NEW YORK ? If you're one of the holdouts still paying bills with checks, tracking your accounts with pen and paper or clipping coupons from the newspaper, 2012 could be the year you take the digital plunge.

A host of budding personal finance services and applications are poised to go mainstream in the new year, and together, they will likely have a big impact on the way Americans bank, shop, and track their finances. Some of the services are web-based, but many take advantage of the proliferation of smartphones, which are now carried by one-third of U.S. adults ? with more likely to join that crowd in the next few days after receiving the gadgets as holiday gifts.

Whether online or mobile, here are some personal finance technologies to watch in 2012:

? Mobile money

The September launch of Google Wallet was just one high-profile move toward the use of smartphones for payments, replacing credit or debit cards. The technology allows users to wave their phones in front of payment terminals and have transactions deducted from linked bank accounts or credit cards. Expect more options for electronic payments from mobile service providers and card networks next year, and wider adoption of the terminals by retailers, mass transit systems and more.

Another innovation that is already being heavily promoted is person-to-person payments. American Express Co., MasterCard Inc., Visa Inc. and PayPal all offer ways for their customers to send and receive money using links to various accounts and cards. As the TV commercials depict, if this technology takes off there will be no more fumbling for cash when it's time to split the check at a restaurant, and sending money across town or across borders will be easier, faster and less expensive.

? Non-bank money management

Mint.com, the popular personal finance site, was only the beginning. A raft of new money management tools are now available that can help users keep track of bills, investments and other aspects of their financial lives.

Among the standouts is Manilla.com, which not only pulls together household bills and financial accounts, but also helps users keep track of details like travel rewards points and magazine subscriptions. The service provides reminders for when bills are due and has features that make it easy to pay bills or set up auto payments. Since the company's goal is to help its customers eliminate paper clutter, there's even a way to store electronic account statements. And it has a smartphone app for accessing all these functions on the go.

Other non-bank options include Pageonce, an app that automatically tracks bills and enables users to make payments on their phone; savvymoney.com, a site that offers debt-management help; and Betterment.com, a site designed to simplify investing.

? Targeted deals

The combination of geo-location technology that can track your movements when you're carrying your smartphone, and QR codes, those weird squares appearing more and more often in advertising, is enabling companies to offer personalized discounts and on-the-spot deals to customers willing to opt into their programs.

Mall shoppers have already started getting texts and emails designed to lure them into certain stores, and the technology can also be used to encourage customers to enter contests, demonstrate new apps or products and even contact customer service.

? Social commerce

Javelin Strategy & Research, a financial services research firm, is using this term to identify the trend toward the combination of commerce and social networking on sites like Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.

While these sites are moving toward making it easier to shop without navigating toward a link, that's just one step toward social commerce.

The concept of financial social networking is also being expanded by companies like Weemba.com, whose site allows individuals to search for a loan by posting nontraditional details like a description of the need for the money ? debt consolidation, a mortgage refinance, or a kitchen makeover complete with the designer's plans, for instance. The details posted add depth to the usual credit score and financial information that banks and other funders may review, and the site opens the lending request to a wider audience.

Other examples of the use or concept of social networking include Kickstarter.com, where creative types can seek funding for their artistic endeavors and those willing to provide seed money can choose to provide all or part of the needed funds to get the project off the ground.

Saveup.com is a game aimed at helping individuals pay down debt and build savings, and Bundle.com uses data tracking and spending information to produce lists of popular restaurants and stores in selected cities, helping users find the right spot at the right price.

Banks are also experimenting with ways to make use of social networking to interact with customers, with some success. Even Bank of America Corp., a recurring target for gripes large and small about the financial system this year, has nearly 365,000 "likes" on its official Facebook page, which it uses for efforts like supporting community causes and advertising opportunities like its Student Leader program, which offers paid internships to high schoolers who work at charitable organizations.

Customers can expect more on these fronts from startups and big financial institutions in the next 12 months.

Human brains unlikely to evolve into a 'supermind' as price to pay would be too high

Human brains unlikely to evolve into a 'supermind' as price to pay would be too high [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 7-Dec-2011

Human minds have hit an evolutionary "sweet spot" and - unlike computers - cannot continually get smarter without trade-offs elsewhere, according to research by the University of Warwick.

Researchers asked the question why we are not more intelligent than we are given the adaptive evolutionary process. Their conclusions show that you can have too much of a good thing when it comes to mental performance.

The evidence suggests that for every gain in cognitive functions, for example better memory, increased attention or improved intelligence, there is a price to pay elsewhere - meaning a highly-evolved "supermind" is the stuff of science fiction.

University of Warwick psychology researcher Thomas Hills and Ralph Hertwig of the University of Basel looked at a range of studies, including research into the use of drugs like Ritalan which help with attention, studies of people with autism as well as a study of the Ashkenazi Jewish population.

For instance, among individuals with enhanced cognitive abilities- such as savants, people with photographic memories, and even genetically segregated populations of individuals with above average IQ, these individuals often suffer from related disorders, such as autism, debilitating synaesthesia and neural disorders linked with enhanced brain growth.

Similarly, drugs like Ritalan only help people with lower attention spans whereas people who don't have trouble focusing can actually perform worse when they take attention-enhancing drugs.

Dr Hills said: "These kinds of studies suggest there is an upper limit to how much people can or should improve their mental functions like attention, memory or intelligence.

"Take a complex task like driving, where the mind needs to be dynamically focused, attending to the right things such as the road ahead and other road users which are changing all the time.

"If you enhance your ability to focus too much, and end up over-focusing on specific details, like the driver trying to hide in your blind spot, then you may fail to see another driver suddenly veering into your lane from the other direction.

"Or if you drink coffee to make yourself more alert, the trade-off is that it is likely to increase your anxiety levels and lose your fine motor control. There are always trade-offs.

"In other words, there is a 'sweet spot' in terms of enhancing our mental abilities if you go beyond that spot - just like in the fairy-tales - you have to pay the price."
